Everything about Montbeliard Cattle totally explained

Montbeliard Cattle are a cattle breed from the Montbéliard region in France.

History

The breed was created through crossing of local breeds from the Franche-Comté region with Fleckvieh cattle at the beginning of the 18th century, explaining the likeness of the Montbeliard cattle and the Fleckvieh cattle. In 1889 the breed was accepted officially, and a stud book was founded.
   In the 1970s Red Holstein cattle was crossed in. At the same time they sporadically crossed in Fleckvieh bulls but this wasn't very successful. In the 1990s the Montbeliard cattle was used for crossing into the breeds Danish Red cattle and Vorderwalder cows.

Characteristics

  • Cows: 700 kg; 136 cm
  • Bulls: 1,000 kg; 148 cm
The animals are red pied with a white head. The skin is clear and the horns are short.

Using

They are used in both beef and milk production, but first used is dairy. The cows give 7600 kg of milk every year. The old cows and calves are sold more expensive than holstein cattle. This breed is used crossing with beef cattle like charolais or limousin.
